Job Summary:

The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the continuous monitoring, operation, and maintenance of the Estate’s water treatment plant to ensure the provision of a safe and high-quality drinking water supply for all residents. The operator will manage the treatment process, including chemical dosing, filtration, and disinfection, while adhering to all public health and safety regulations.

 

Job Profile

Plant Operation:

  • Operate and adjust controls on all water treatment equipment, including pumps, motors, filters, and chemical feed systems, to purify and clarify water.
  • Monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges, including those on the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, to track plant performance and detect malfunctions.
  • Conduct manual and automated adjustments to water flow and chemical dosages to maintain optimal treatment and water quality.

Water Quality Testing:

  • Collect and test water samples for chemical, bacterial, and physical properties (e.g., pH, turbidity, chlorine levels) to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Perform and record results of routine laboratory tests and interpret data to make necessary adjustments to the treatment process.

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform regular visual inspections and preventive maintenance on all plant equipment, facilities, and grounds.
  • Conduct basic repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment or report complex issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage, and inventory management of treatment chemicals.
  • Conduct regular housekeeping to keep the plant, compound area, storage area and equipment to be neat and tidy all the time.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including those for chemical handling and confined space entry.
  • Ensure all plant operations meet or exceed local and federal health and safety regulations for drinking water.

Emergency Response:

  • Respond quickly and effectively to alarms, equipment failures, and water quality issues, often requiring on-call duty after hours and on weekends.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed logs of all operational activities, equipment maintenance, and test results for both internal reporting and regulatory purposes.

 

Job Specification

Qualifications and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; technical or vocational training in water treatment is a plus.
  • Relevant water treatment operator certifications are highly desirable and may be required depending on local regulations.
  • Experience operating and maintaining water treatment plant equipment, preferably in a residential or small-scale industrial setting.

Required Skills

  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of water treatment processes, chemistry, and mechanical systems. Ability to operate manual and automated control systems (e.g., SCADA) and testing equipment.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate water quality data and troubleshoot operational issues.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to monitoring equipment, performing tests, and maintaining accurate records.
